Catanzaro is an Italian sociology professor who gives a sociological analysis of the cultural, economic and political features of Sicilian life under the Mafia. He traces the origin and evolution of the Sicilian Mafia from the 1860s to 1990. It also offers historical context surrounding specific Mafia occurrences and codes. The violence, organization, and community life surrounding the Mafia are all analyzed by Catanzaro. He also suggests the the once small, rural operation in Palermo that was the beginning is very similar to the Mafia now save for the much expanded size of operation.
